What Is Viral Hepatitis?
It is an inflammation of the liver, most commonly caused by a viral infection.
The liver is a vital organ that processes nutrients, filters the blood and fights infection. When the liver is inflamed or damaged, its function can be affected.
Early symptoms include fatigue, sudden nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, low grade fever, joint pain, and others. Hepatitis C also causes a yellowing of the skin and eyes.
There are 5 different hepatitis viruses, namely A, B, C, D and E.
- Contaminated food and water, Hepatitis A and E is spread mainly through contaminated food and water. The disease is prevalent in areas with poor sanitation and a lack of safe water, but rarely becomes chronic.
- Bodily fluids or blood contact, Hepatitis B is transmitted through contact with blood or bodily fluids from an infected person. Hepatitis B is also most commonly transmitted from mother to child during birth and delivery.
- Blood-to-blood contact, Hepatitis C is mainly spread through blood-to-blood contact i.e., unsafe injection practises, and inadequate sterilisation of medical equipment.
- Infected blood contact, Hepatitis D is spread through contact with infected blood, and only occurs in people already infected with Hepatitis B.

World Hepatitis Day 28 July 2022 – Treatment
There are vaccines for all types of hepatitis apart from Type C which is treated with antiviral medicines.
Vaccination for Hepatitis B forms a critical part of the vaccines given to babies.
The most important element in fighting hepatitis is to have the vaccine, and to get tested if you think you might have the virus.
In Africa Hepatitis B and C are a silent epidemic affecting over 70 million people, and Covid-19 has set back treatment in some countries.
