World Cancer Day 2024 – Equity For All
Life saving cancer diagnosis and treatment is not equal for all in many countries.
Who you are, your level of education, where you live and your level of income can impact whether your cancer is diagnosed, treated, and cared for in an appropriate and cost-effective manner.
Approximately 70% of cancer deaths are in developing countries who are ill equipped to deal with cancer. This includes:
- Lack of awareness.
- Scarce resources.
- And lack of investment in public health services.
Inequality is closely associated with socioeconomic status with vulnerable populations unable to afford cancer medicines and treatment, and often having to travel long distances for treatment.
3 Tips – Prevention, Risk Reduction and Early Detection
#1 World Cancer Day 2024 – Prevention
Not every type of cancer is preventable, however we can prevent many cancers through lifestyle choices alone.
#2 Risk Reduction – Healthy Lifestyle
You can choose NOT to smoke, to KEEP FIT, to REDUCE ALCOHOL intake, maintain a HEALTHY WEIGHT and REDUCE exposure to the sun.
#3 Early Detection – Have A Checkup
Early Detection is very important as some cancers can be found early before they have a chance to grow and spread.
Woman
- Women need to have a mammogram to detect breast cancer and have a Pap smear annually to check for cervical cancer.
- Cervical cancer is one of the most highly preventable and curable forms of cancer.
Men
- Men need to have regular checks for prostate cancer after the age of 55 and have a PSA test.
- If there is a family history of prostate cancer, men over the age of 40 should be checked.
Be aware of your family history of Cancer.
