Woman’s Month August 2022
Woman’s Month August 2022: Every August, South Africans celebrate and highlight issues affecting all women.
Whilst much progress has been made towards equality and the empowerment of women, there is a long way to go.
There is still a gender pay gap locally, violence against women and girls persists, and women fall behind men in terms of healthcare and education.
SA Government – Woman’s Month 2022
Gender based violence
Gender based violence, despite receiving governmental attention and new laws being passed in January 2022, is a scourge in our society.
South Africa continues to grapple with increasing rates of domestic abuse and femicide. This is exacerbated by poverty, unemployment, a patriarchal society, a general lack of resources at a government and community level, and a reluctance to report GBV incidents.
How can women contribute to gender justice?
- Raise your voice, be heard, do not be silent, have an opinion.
- Support and listen.
- Know your rights.
- Understand your worth at home and in the workplace.
- Get involved in the local community.
How do we contribute to ending the Gender Based Violence pandemic in South Africa?
- Listen to and believe survivors, create a safe space for conversation.
- Motivate for better services and safe havens for victims of GBV.
- Discuss gender roles with the youth, and the stereotypes associated with gender.
If you think someone you know is exhibiting signs of abuse, offer them help and support.
