Discovery Assisted Reproductive Therapy (ART) Benefit

Female infertility procedures and treatments

Discovery Assisted Reproductive Therapy (ART): The ART benefit gives members on the Executive and Comprehensive plans cover for a defined list of female infertility procedures and treatments, up to a Rand limit of R122 000 per person per year, subject to specific rules. Cover is up to 75% of the Discovery Rate when you use an accredited facility in the Discovery network.

Cover includes consultations, ultrasounds, a defined list of pathology, egg retrieval, embryo transfer and freezing, admission costs and lab fees, medicine and embryo and sperm storage relating to the approved assisted reproductive therapy procedures.

The accredited network facility that you choose will typically dispense and bill for the medicine that you need as part of your treatment. Where the facility is unable to dispense medicine related to your treatment, your treating provider can give you a script, which will need to be authorised before it is filled. Scripts are submitted via MedXpress.

There are a number of blood tests covered under the ART benefit. These tests are also covered at 75% of DHR and subject to the annual limit for this benefit.

There is specific criteria to activate the benefit, and treatment guidelines:

• You are on an Executive or Comprehensive plan. Cover will stop if you change your plan to a lower plan at any time.
• Are female, aged 25-50 years depending on treatment:
  • Cryopreservation is available to male members post puberty and females members post puberty until age 42, if registered on the Oncology programme,
  • Female members age 43 to 50 years only have access to one egg donated cycle.
• Undergo treatment at one of the SA Society of Reproductive Medicine and Gynaecological Endoscopy (SASREG) accredited facilities.
• If you no longer meet the age requirements, cover will stop at the end of your active cycle

You can activate the ART benefit on Discovery’s website, or you can call Discovery on 0860 998877 to activate. Your treating doctor or specialist can also assist with the registration process.

Infertility is classified as a PMB (Prescribed Minimum Benefits) condition by the Council for Medical Schemes, and the following is covered under PMB on all plans:

• Blood tests (day3 FSH/LH, Oestradiol, Thyroid function, prolactin, rubella, HIV, VDRL, Chlamydia, D21 progesterone)
• Counselling and advice on sexual behaviour, temperature charts etc.
• Hysterosalpingogram
• Hysteroscopy
• Laparoscopy
• Ovulation defects and deficiencies
• Semen analysis
• Surgery (uterus and tubal)
• Treatment of local infections

PMB cover is subject to registration and approval, and your treating doctor or specialist can assist with this.
