Regular self-breast examination and regular mammograms are key to early detection. Mammograms save lives.
- Breast screenings are important as many women have no symptoms at all, and warning signs can vary by individual.
- It is essential to know your family medical history, as breast cancer can run in the female side of a family.
Decrease your Risk
Breast cancer cannot be prevented, but you can decrease your risk by:
- Following a healthy diet,
- Regular exercise,
- Not smoking,
- Reducing your alcohol intake.

What can I do?
Make sure you get checked, and encourage family members to go for routine checks.
Raise awareness in your community though education. Be a “pink warrior” for the month of October and spread hope for those who are living with breast cancer.
How does my medical aid cover me?
Discovery Health Members Executive, Comprehensive, Priority, Saver, Smart and Core plans.
- The member can have a mammogram every 2 years, unless the member is determined to be elevated risk, and then the mammogram is annual.
- A mammogram is paid for from the member’s prevention and screening benefit. Any consultation costs after the screening test are paid for from the available day-to-day benefits.
